The Awatea (Maori for “eye of the dawn' or ''daylight') built by Vickers Armstrong Barrow for Union Steam Shipping New Zealand, was launched on 25 February 1936. Photo taken during night from the High Level Bridge probably prior to departure in July 1936 . The Awatea was requisitioned during WW 2 as a troopship and sunk by the Luftwaffe off North Africa 1942. The hammer head crane in the photograph was destroyed during the 'Barrow Blitz' in 1941.
