SS Arnotegi-Mendi and Hopper Aground

View looking Northeast on the Walney Channel side of Roa Island. LMS Hopper No 2 is aground on the Piel Jetty. Nine men on the shore by the hopper and two on the deck. Rowing boat on right. Ladder on side of ship. In the foreground is the launch rail line for the lifeboat. Ship was carrying 6,000 tons of iron ore from Almeria to barrow for the Askam and Millom Ironworks. The hopper came off the Piel Island Jetty on the evening of the 20 Jan and Arnoldi- Mendi was expected to be refloated on the next high tide.
