Rural workers

Heavy horses were the powerhouse in the countryside. The farrier was a vital cog in keeping things moving. The farmer would see in his lifetime the slow approach of mechanisation - the horse-drawn plough could not compete with the tractor. The early Fordson tractor came over from America to help replace the many thousands of horses which died in the First World War.
